Google Sound Maps
Google Maps has been at the forefront of mashups, facilitating the creation of many interesting applications over the last few years. One of the more recent ones are sound maps. Essentially you record sounds, tag them to describe them and then show them up next to the location where they were recorded. The most recent addition to such mashups is the Montreal Sound Map. Using this mashup, you can hear the stream at Queen Mary Street or the traffic at Rue De l’Esplanade. Anyone can upload sounds from Montreal to this map and access them using this application.
A few other sound maps (as listed on Google Maps Mania) to lookup are as follows:
- Woices - a worldwide sound map
- Sound Seeker Google Map - A map of sounds from around NYC
- Puget Soundscape - A map of recorded whale sounds
- Terrasound - ’soundwalks’ in Portugal, Turkey, Switzerland and California
- GeoGraffiti - a ‘free verbal message board’
- MyVox - add your own voice to Google Maps
