Will RTMP Knock Out Comet?
Adobe’s announcement today to publish the RTMP specification has filled the RIA community with as much hope and promise as Obama’s swearing in as President has to everyone in America. RTMP is the protocol that enables audio and video streaming in the Flash Media Server and the LifeCycle Data Services (LCDS). Its a robust protocol that enables server initiated data push. In addition to working over specifically assigned ports it can be tunneled over HTTP and HTTP(S). So far Comet has been leading the data push story in the open source and open standards world. Now it may face tough competition from RTMP.
Besides, alternatives like Red5 will get a chance to be open and still comply with the standards.
Bravo Adobe, it was AMF last year and now its RTMP.
The specification will be published in the first half of 2009.
